WHIPLASH
Cervical Acceleration/Deceleration Injury
Whiplash is an acute cervical spine sprain with muscle, ligament and possibly discogenic neurological and vascular components. Most of the injuries are from automobile accidents.
Symptoms usually develop after 48 to 72 hours or up to 6 weeks if it is discogenic.
Carpel tunnel symptoms can also result from double crush syndrome or from holding on to the steering wheel while the accident is happening.
*The amount of damage to a car usually does NOT indicate the extent of the injuries.
*Stiffer posture at the time of impact can increase the amount of whiplash injury.
*Seat belt and shoulder harnesses can decrease fatalities by 45 to 50%, but they can also increase soft tissue and vascular injuries. Air bags also decrease fatalities, but can increase wrist and TMJ injuries.
